If good health is the natural state of the human body, what causes sickness?
When poor health and illness show up, it means the body’s perfect ability to heal has been interrupted. Think of storm clouds blocking sunlight—the sun’s power remains at 100 percent in spite of the cloud cover, and eventually the shines through—every single time. Only about 3 percent of all human illness can be attributed to a genetic defect of some kind, the vast majority of health disorders are caused by interference to naturally occurring processes in the body. Chemical imbalances caused by multiple deficiencies in nutrition, or excess toxicity the body cannot eliminate—or both—are the culprit in many cases. Another cause is vertebral subluxation, silent disruption of the nervous system’s communication—the controlling source of all health-producing activities in every last one of the body’s trillions of cells.

What is a vertebral subluxation?
It is through our nervous system that every one of us lives and experiences every aspect of life, in each moment. Everything we see, hear, feel, and think is a series of nerve impulses. The nervous system is the master control system of all other body systems, including the immune system. Interference to nerve communication can occur in the delicate spinal nerves when spinal bones are misaligned or do not move properly. This is known as vertebral subluxation. Subluxations can build up gradually over time due to stress, or occur instantly due to injury. There are three categories of stress that can cause subluxation: physical stress (injury and trauma), emotional stress (thought), and chemical stress (toxins in the environment and our diet). Left uncorrected, subluxations can interfere with virtually every aspect of innate health and healing.

How does chiropractic improve health?
Specific, gentle chiropractic adjustments applied to the spine can reduce and even eliminate vertebral subluxations. As subluxations are reduced and corrected with chiropractic adjustments, nerve interference dissipates and optimal innate healing is restored. This restores the miracle of everyday healing. Miracles are expected here.

Why do babies need chiropractic?
Even so-called “easy” deliveries can result in spinal stress and vertebral subluxation in a newborn baby. If, as commonly occurs in a hospital setting, the birthing process is rushed or the doctor resorts to extraction methods, the baby’s head may inadvertently be used as a handle to help pull the baby out. Medically directed births that result in neurological problems: Traumatic Birth Syndrome. Regardless of the birth setting, the trip down the birth canal is stressful. A newborn’s tiny spinal structures are easily disturbed and displaced. My youngest practice members receive their first chiropractic checkup as soon after birth as possible, preferably within hours of being born.

When should a baby receive a spinal checkup?
According to the well known chiropractic pediatric specialist, the late Larry Webster, DC, there are six times during a baby’s first year of life when spinal examinations are vitally important:

  1. After the birth process
  2. When the baby starts to hold his/her head up
  3. When the baby can sit up
  4. When the baby starts to crawl
  5. When the baby starts to stand
  6. When the baby starts to walk
How safe is chiropractic for babies and children?

Chiropractic is famous for helping children heal from a wide variety of health challenges and maintain a balanced, robust immune response. In the entire 110-year history of chiropractic, not a single malpractice complaint has ever been filed for harm to any child.

How can chiropractic care help pregnant women?
Chiropractic care through pregnancy is not only safe, it is essential. Better health during pregnancy results in easier labor and delivery, making for a better transition for the baby into this life. As the pregnant mom’s posture changes naturally through the pregnancy due to centre of gravity changes, the baby’s weight places increased pressure on the spine and pelvis. Toward the end of the pregnancy these changes are seen in the classic "waddle" of pregnancy. What cannot be seen are the millions of different hormonal changes and chemical reactions that occur in both the mother and the developing baby. All of these are controlled and coordinated through the nervous system. Regular chiropractic adjustments throughout the pregnancy relieve the pressures and spinal distortions that result in vertebral subluxations. This is preventive care in the best sense of the term, preventing subluxation in mothers, in turn helping prevent subluxation in their babies during childbirth.
